ASU extracted 6,000 cubic meters of marine waste in 2024

THE ANCILLARY Services Unit (ASU) recorded 6,795 cubic meters of coastal waste equivalent to 1,699 truckloads or 2,400 tons last year.

ASU head Paul Bermejo said the volume was gathered during the agency’s 363 activities conducted in 2024.

In 2024, March had the highest coastal volume of sacks of 2,068 followed by June with 1,996 and August with 1,915. 309 volunteers participated in the coastal volume of sacks collection from Jan to Dec 2024.

For the riverbank’s volume of sacks collected, November has the highest number of 821 sacks followed by June with 685 sacks that was participated by 41 volunteers throughout the year.

The total volumes were collected from the 26 coastal barangays from the First to Third District and 8 riverbanks from the First District.

Last Jan 6, 2025, Bermejo said in an interview that the holiday season’s wastes worsened the flood that occurred on a Saturday. ASU has also requested equipment from the City Engineer’s Office (CEO) for the clearing operations.

Among ASU’s drainage activities, the agency has coordinated with Yachiyo Engineering, a Japanese engineering company that opened in Davao City, to install flood monitoring devices at Tulip Drive and Magsaysay Avenue.

Bermejo said they are recommending that the City Mayor’s Office, through the Task Force Drainage And Right-Of-Way, for additional devices to continue monitoring the flood levels.
