Army recovers firearm in clash with NPA rebels

TROOPS of the 36th Infantry Battalion (36IB) captured a high-powered firearm during an encounter with remnants of the communist terrorist group’s (CTG’s) Guerrilla Front 30 in the hinterlands of Barangay Calatngan, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, on the afternoon of Sept. 6.

The armed engagement resulted in the capture of one high-powered firearm and a backpack containing personal belongings, marking another significant milestone in the 36IB’s relentless pursuit of the remaining NPA members.

It is worth noting that on April 26, most of its members surrendered to the 36IB, including Joel Mahinay, also known as Nicko, the Deputy Secretary, and his wife, along with 12 high-powered firearms.

The Army said the surrenders led to the immediate dismantling of the guerrilla front, which was a major blow to the group’s capability to operate in the area.

“Remnants of CTGs are trying to evade our operations, but they are less likely to survive. With our focused military operations and relentless pursuit, their only option is to surrender. We call on the remaining CTG members to surrender, avail of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, reunite with their families, and reintegrate into society away from danger”, said Brigadier General Arsenio Sadural, commander of the 901st Brigade.

The government’s E-CLIP offers former CTG members a chance to start anew. Through this program, they can receive livelihood and financial assistance, as well as skills training, to help them reintegrate into society and build a better life free from the dangers of armed conflict.

The 901st Brigade reiterates its commitment to eradicating insurgency in the area, paving the way for a more peaceful and stable Surigao del Sur.
