Areas of concern

THE Police Regional Office XI on Wednesday is closely watching eight barangays in the region for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on Oct. 30.

Speaking at the AFP-PNP press briefing held at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, PRO XI spokesperson Major Catherine Dela Rey, said these barangays in Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental are evaluated if they should be elevated into “areas of concern.”

“There are possible areas of concerns na raised no red all the rest are yellow category, heavy, green are peaceful, eight barangays under yellow,” Lawyer Gay Enumerables, acting regional director of Commission on Election (Comelec) XI, added.

“There were concerns also baka madagdagan for Davao city but no red and orange. Medyo samok na kaayo na [area],” Enumerables further said.

The country’s areas of concern classification have four categories — green, yellow, orange, and red.

Green refers to areas that do not have security concerns and are generally peaceful and orderly, while yellow is considered an area of concern, meaning it has a history of election-related incidents, possible employment of partisan armed groups, the occurrence of politically motivated election-related incidents and had been previously declared under Comelec control.

Orange, meanwhile, means areas of immediate concern where there is a serious armed threat; while red means areas of grave concern, which exhibit combined factors under the yellow category with serious armed threats that may warrant the motu proprio (on its own) declaration of Comelec control.

Enumerables said Davao Region remains peaceful.

Captain Hazel Tuazon, spokesperson of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), said they did not record election-related incidents in the city.

Moreover, Major Dela Rey, said a total of 3,000 personnel will be deployed to ensure a safe and peaceful Barangay and SK October 2023 elections.
