The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office handed over the check of P300,000 to the local government of Kalibo, Aklan on Thursday, Oct. 17.
CDRRMO head Alfredo Baloran said the check represented the assistance of the city government following the fire that gutted the public market of the town.
A huge fire gobbled 70 stores on Sept. 15, causing an estimated P35 million in damage. A hundred vendors were displaced because of the tragic incident.
The City Council approved the aid on Tuesday last week, taking money from the five percent calamity fund of the local government.
According to Baloran, extending help to LGUs that need help has become a norm for the Davao City. “This has been the practice of the city– helping other cities, municipalities, and provinces struck by different calamities,” he said.
Last August, the city government also extended cash assistance worth P1 million to Ilocos Norte after it was ravaged by typhoon Ineng.
“Since Kalibo, Aklan was declared under state of calamity because of the big fire, the Davao City government, through Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, decided to extend aid to them through our calamity funds,” he said.
