THE PHILIPPINE Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), in partnership with local government units and agencies, is leading the Veterans Week observance from April 5 to 11 at Freedom Park near the Davao City’s post office.
The week began with a Sunrise Ceremony on April 5, which included a wreath-laying and flower offering in honor of World War II veterans.
The main highlight is Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) on Wednesday, April 9. The event will feature a short tribute and wreath-laying.
The week will end with a Sunset Ceremony on April 11 at 5 p.m., also at Freedom Park.
PVAO head Remedios Josol emphasized the importance of remembering WWII veterans, most of whom are now over 100 years old and unable to attend public events. In response, the city has shifted to simpler but meaningful ceremonies.

Josol also highlighted the educational assistance program for descendants of WWII veterans. Even if the veteran and spouse have passed away, great-grandchildren may still apply if they provide valid documents.
Qualified students receive up to ₱30,000 per semester or ₱60,000 annually. The program began in the 1980s with just ₱3,000 per semester and has since supported many families. Today, only about 15 active student beneficiaries remain in the area.
“Whatever freedom we enjoy today is because of the sacrifices of our veterans,” Josol said.
As Veterans Week continues, the public is encouraged to join the ceremonies and pay tribute to the courage and sacrifices of our World War II heroes.
