About The Film

Step into the world of the “Metaverse Filipino Worker“—or, MFW—a short film exploring how Filipinos are embracing Web3 as a new frontier for work. Born out of the play-to-earn boom of 2021, the concept of the MFW has evolved from players simply grinding for in-game tokens to highly skilled professionals shaping the global decentralized economy.

From the bustling streets of Metro Manila to the tranquil rice fields of Pampanga and Nueva Ecija, the series takes a peek into the daily lives of key members from YGG Pilipinas—a Community Manager, an Esports Captain, a Guild Leader, a Mommy Influencer, and more—each forging their own path in the rapidly growing Web3 workforce.

Written, narrated and directed by Leah Callon-Butler, creator of the viral 2021 short film, Play-to-Earn: NFT Gaming in the Philippines, and original musical score by L!NE OUTS!DE, the collaborative banner of Allan Pineda, better known as Apl.de.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas, and Edgar Sinio, aka Artek606, Metaverse Filipino Worker celebrates the ingenuity and resilience of digital pioneers who are redefining what it means to work globally—capturing how Web3 is unlocking borderless opportunities, where talent and technology open doors that once required a passport.

The animated title sequence for “Metaverse Filipino Worker” was created by Lucius Felimus, a Manila-based NFT artist specializing in cyberpunk landscapes that reimagine Metro Manila as a futuristic megalopolis. His work, inspired by Philippine urban culture and neon-drenched dystopian aesthetics, has been showcased in galleries and virtual exhibitions internationally.

Made possible through the vision and support of YGG Pilipinas, this short film honors the creativity and determination of their community, spotlighting the unique human-centered stories that are driving a new era of work and innovation. Today’s launch of “Metaverse Filipino Worker” marks the beginning of YGG Pilipinas’ sustained mission to ensure that Filipinos are not left behind as rapid digital and technological shifts reshape the future of work in the years ahead.

Spraky

Community Manager

Spraky is a community manager at YGG Pilipinas and co-founder of Axie University (AxU), where he has onboarded thousands of players to Web3. Unlike his parents and older sister, who moved to Canada in search of higher-paying work, Spraky has been able to pursue his career while working from their family home in the province of Nueva Ecija. His episode reflects on the hard lessons he learned during his first crypto cycle, offering a candid look at the challenges and resilience required to thrive in the industry. Spraky’s journey showcases the importance of community, education, and adaptability in the ever-evolving world of Web3.

Disi

Esports Captain

Disi, a competitive Web3 esports athlete, competes in high stakes tournaments and streams content for his global fanbase all while living an idyllic life in the Philippine province of Pampanga. His episode shows how he was able to apply what he learned about economic principles in Web3 to the future of his family’s farm, where he pioneered the cultivation of rare dragon fruit varieties. Disi consistently draws parallels between his experiences in crypto and farming, showing how the two complement and inspire each other. At a time when other young Filipinos are leaving their agricultural roots behind, Disi’s story is an anomaly — his full-time job in the metaverse allowed him to make farming his side hustle.

JB

Guild Leader

As the founder of NFT X-Street, a computer shop in Quezon City that specializes in Web3 games, JB represents a new generation of entrepreneurs thriving in the decentralized digital economy. His story is about building a sustainable business that promotes Filipino culture, builds community, and provides local jobs, while operating on a global scale. JB’s journey underscores the opportunities that Web3 creates for Filipinos to smash traditional geographical limitations and participate in a borderless future — while having fun with friends.

Since 2022, she has worked behind the scenes at YGG Pilipinas as an Events Assistant, but she dreams of stepping into the spotlight to become a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) in Web3. Julie’s goal is to inspire other moms to explore this decentralized digital frontier, empowering them to earn additional income while staying close to their families and engaging with their children through technology. Her episode highlights the challenges and triumphs of pursuing a new path without having to leave her home country, showcasing her determination to build a brighter future for her daughter.

However, the school faces an urgent need to raise funds for a new building and modern equipment to teach the latest industry-relevant software and skills. Their episode offers a moving glimpse into the transformative potential of technology to empower underserved communities and shape the workforce of the future.

From OFW to MFW

The historical significance of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in relation to Metaverse Filipino Workers (MFWs) lies in the evolution of how Filipinos have adapted to global opportunities for economic survival and growth. Both represent pivotal moments in the Filipino labor narrative, shaped by resilience, community values, and entrepreneurial spirit.

OFWs were instrumental in addressing widespread unemployment in the Philippines, becoming a cornerstone of the national economy. Their remittances, amounting to billions of dollars annually, not only supported their families but also stabilized the country’s financial systems. This economic contribution earned them the title of “modern-day heroes.” However, the social cost of their migration was profound, as many families endured long-term separations. Despite this, OFWs exemplified the Filipino traits of perseverance and adaptability, thriving in foreign environments and gaining global recognition. The Philippine government responded to their critical role by formalizing policies to protect their rights and ensure the safe transfer of remittances, further institutionalizing their economic significance.

In contrast, MFWs represent a transformative shift in how Filipinos participate in the global economy. Unlike OFWs, MFWs do not need to leave the country to access international opportunities. Instead, they leverage digital platforms and blockchain technologies to work remotely, earning income in virtual economies while remaining physically present within their homes and communities. This transition alleviates the need for family separation, addressing one of the major challenges faced by OFWs. MFWs also signify a move away from traditional labor-intensive roles to digital work that requires advanced skills. This reflects the changing demands of the global market and highlights the ability of Filipinos to adapt to these shifts.

Despite their differences, the core motivation remains the same: both OFWs and MFWs seek better livelihoods for themselves and their families, driven by economic necessity and opportunity. Like OFWs, MFWs embody the Filipino spirit of bayanihan, forming global networks of collaboration and mutual support. These modern workers find this sense of community in decentralized communities and virtual ecosystems, echoing the diaspora networks of OFWs that offered solidarity and assistance in foreign lands.

The transition from OFWs to MFWs signifies not just a shift in how work is performed but also a redefinition of empowerment. While OFWs relied on physical migration and labor, MFWs demonstrated how technology can unlock borderless opportunities, allowing workers to own their skills and contributions in ways that were not possible before. This progression reflects the enduring ability of Filipinos to reinvent themselves and thrive in an ever-changing global landscape, bridging the historical narrative of migration with the possibilities of the metaverse.
