ASSOCIATION of Philippine-China Understanding (APCU) chairperson Raul Lambino emphasized that China is not an enemy, so the Filipino people should strive to maintain diplomacy and economic relations with its Asian neighbor.
In a recent conference held at the Holy Cross of Davao College on Thursday, July 25, Lambino’s speech highlighted the importance of engaging various nations, including China to safeguard its interests.
“We are not anti-Europeans. We are not also pro-China. We are only pro-Filipinos,” he said.
Lambino said the Philippines’ relationship with China experienced fluctuations over the years, but it should not cut ties since the Asian superpower remains crucial to the country’s economic and diplomatic strategies.
He pointed out that the Philippines imports over $60 billion worth of goods from China annually and exports around $14 billion, including agricultural products like durian. Lambino also mentioned the significant role of Chinese investments in the Philippines, despite some challenges and competition from other Southeast Asian countries.
Lambino addressed concerns about the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the United States, suggesting that it might not be in the best interest of the Philippines.
He expressed fears that the Philippines could become a battleground in the full-blown conflict between the US and China over Taiwan. Instead, the country should pursue a “more balanced and independent foreign policy.”
Finally, Lambino called for continuous dialogue and diplomacy with China, and the Philippines should focus on its own interests rather than be swayed by external pressures.
