- New DCPO chief asks for time to prove his competence
THE NEWLY appointed Davao City Police Office chief asked for a chance to prove his worth following a grilling from city councilors on his sudden assignment without Mayor Sebastian Duterte’s knowledge.
Colonel Hansel Marantan, who assumed the position on July 10th, expressed uncertainty about his reception on Tuesday’s regular session, stating, “I don’t know if I am wanted or unwanted.”
Nonetheless, he pledged to demonstrate his commitment to maintaining peace and order in Davao City, acknowledging its reputation as one of the country’s safest urban areas.
The new police chief also shared his background, mentioning that he was a classmate of his predecessor, the recently relieved Colonel Richard Bad-ang.
Marantan, in his message during the session, said “I think the challenge for me now is to prove more to merit your acceptance in Davao City. Obviously, Davao City is a peaceful place to live in,” Marantan said.
Being new to Davao, Marantan candidly admitted that he doesn’t know the local language but hoped it would not be used against him.
Meanwhile, lawmakers raised concerns about Marantan’s appointment, questioning the circumstances surrounding his selection and expressing their commitment to the safety and security of Davao City residents.
Councilor Luna Acosta, chair of the security committee, reassured the public of the dedication of the mayor and the city council to maintaining peace and public safety.
She acknowledged the unexpected nature of the leadership change but urged for transparency in future decisions.
Councilor Diosdado Angelo Mahipus Jr. echoed Acosta’s sentiments, stating that it was too early to judge Marantan’s competence. He hoped that the new police chief would prove his capabilities through his actions in the coming days and months.
Police officials at the session emphasized their adherence to the chain of command and the organizational hierarchy, assuring the council of their commitment to serving the community.
