FIRST-TIME champ Jayson Tatum signed a contract extension with the Boston Celtics for a historic $314 million over five years.
After a momentous championship run, Jayson Tatum made yet another history by being the highest-paid player. The five-time all-star has chosen to stay in the team that selected him third overall in the 2017 NBA Draft.
The extension allowed the 26-year-old wing to edge out his teammate and backcourt partner Jaylen Brown who previously owned the richest supermax contract worth $303 million over five years in 2023.
The Celtics now have the two biggest contracts negotiated in NBA history. In 2023, Jaylen Brown, the reigning Finals MVP, signed a five-year, $285 million extension with Boston.
With two of the most expensive contracts in the NBA, the Boston Celtics stand to suffer the luxury tax penalty for the 2025-2026 season, said to be worth over $430 million.
Brown and Tatum were key players that led the Celtics to their 18th golden trophy, finally getting one over heated rival Los Angeles Lakers for the most championships. Tatum led his team in total points, rebounds, and assists in the final series against the Dallas Mavericks.
He averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.2 assists as they easily dispatched superstar duo Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
