THE GOLDEN State Warriors faced the end of an era as Klay Thompson signed with the Dallas Mavericks via a sign-and-trade deal involving the Dallas Mavericks and the Charlotte Hornets.
In the deal, Dallas receives Thompson from Golden State and a second-round pick via Charlotte. Meanwhile, Charlotte gets Josh Green from Dallas and sends a second-round pick to Golden State.
Thompson signs with Dallas on a 3-year, $50 million deal. The Warriors also signed free agent De’Anthony Melton using the mid-level exception that was activated after releasing Thompson.
Thompson, the long-time ‘Splash Bro’ of Stephen Curry, agreed to part ways with the Warriors in free agency, effectively ending his time with the team.
Thompson was an essential piece in four championship runs of the Warriors, three of which were between the years 2015 and 2018.
In 2019, however, the five-time all-star suffered the first of two consecutive lower leg injuries, which sidelined him for more than two years.
Thompson had discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Los Angeles Clippers before ultimately choosing the Mavericks.
The Warriors announced that they will retire Thompson’s jersey number.
