THE DAVAO City Police Office (DCPO) continues to monitor death threats and harassment of journalists.
Fortunately, it has not received any reports so far involving journalists in the city. Nevertheless, DCPO spokesperson Captain Hazel Tuazon encouraged media practitioners to report threats immediately so law enforcers could act on them.
“After the blotter at the nearest police station where the threat was received, they can bring this to the Public Information Office so that we can coordinate with the Intelligence and Investigation in the headquarters,” she said.
Her comments came in the wake of the murder of Misamis Occidental radio anchor Juan Jumalon who was killed during a live broadcast. The gruesome killing was witnessed by spectators who tuned in to the Facebook page of 94.7 Gold FM station on Sunday.
The gunman pretended to ask for help and then barged into the announcer’s booth to shoot the victim twice.
“Dili lang balewalaon ang mga threats nga nadawat dapat naa tay action ana kay simbako kung tinud on maulahi na unya ang tanan (We can’t just ignore the threats, we must take action because if it’s real, then it would have been too late),” she said.
Moreover, Tuazon said they could detail security for journalists if they pass the assessment process.
“And the DCPO is willing to provide assistance to all the media that will ask for help,” she added.
