Annual city subsidy to senior citizens doubles

SENIOR citizens in the city will receive an annual subsidy of P3,000 each, representing a 100% increase from the previous P1,500.

Lawmakers on Tuesday, May 20, introduced changes to the “The Amended Annual Financial Assistance to all Qualified Senior Citizens Ordinance of Davao City” of 2022.

“Even if it is a small amount, at least we were able to help them, especially for their medical needs,” Councilor Pilar Braga told reporters in an earlier interview.

Braga, chairperson of the committee on social services, said the legislation aims to support the elderly in the cost of maintenance and other expenses. The annual subsidy will be released between August to October annually.

For the qualifications, he/she must be 60 years old and above; must be a holder of an original senior citizens ID issued by the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs of the city; and is a bonafide resident of the city for at least 6 months,  with a barangay residential certification duly issued by the barangay.

The ordinance was passed with no additional comments and reactions, but during its second reading on May 6, it gained a vote of unanimity.

Meanwhile, OSCA Head Lorenzo Borja urged the seniors to update their IDs and to register themselves to avail of the subsidy.

In an interview with the City Information Office, Borja said the cut-off date for this year’s subsidy registration is set on May 31, meaning individuals who turn 60 in June 2025 will only be eligible to receive their subsidy in 2026.
