Ten arrested for Comelec liquor ban violation

TEN INDIVIDUALS were arrested on Sunday night, May 11, 2025, in Toril District and Bolton Street, Poblacion, for violating the liquor ban implemented before the election day.

Captain Hazel Tuazon, spokesperson for the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), reported that the latest arrests involved two individuals in Bayanihan Street in Toril around 11:50 p.m. 

They were identified only as alias Arwin, 25, a resident of Rasay Street, and Analyn, 35, a resident of San Juan Village in Bangkal. The suspects were allegedly caught in the act of drinking liquor, and one bottle of Red Horse beer was seized from them.

Earlier, around 11:17 p.m. on the same night, police apprehended five individuals engaged in a drinking session beside the road at GTH Purok 13, Lower Lubogan, Toril. 

These individuals were identified only as alias Jay, 28, a furniture installer from Talomo; Joy, 26, a beautician from Barangay Lubogan, Toril; Aerol, 20, a laborer from GTH; Jake, 24, a resident of GTH; and alias Dave, 22, also a resident of GTH, all within Toril district. A half-consumed 700ml bottle of Tanduay Select was confiscated from them. 

According to Tuazon, the suspects violated Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 11057.

In a separate incident around 10:24 p.m. on Sunday, three individuals were arrested near the dike by the Bolton Ice Plant in Barangay 1-A for the same liquor ban violation. 

They were identified only as alias Angelito, 25, a construction worker from Buhangin; Arlo, 31, a photographer from Matina Crossing; and Michael, 24, a student from Buhangin. These individuals were allegedly caught drinking Fundador rum.

The confiscated items included a partially consumed one-liter bottle, two transparent shot glasses, a light green plastic pitcher, and a white bowl.

The suspects and the seized evidence are currently in the custody of their respective police stations pending the filing of appropriate charges with the City Prosecutor’s Office.

Tuazon reiterated that “Pursuant to Comelec Resolution No. 11057, a nationwide liquor ban is in effect from May 11 to 12, 2025 (Sunday-Monday) in connection with the upcoming national and local elections.”

The prohibited acts include the sale, furnishing, offering, buying, serving, or consumption of any intoxicating liquor during this period.

 Violators face penalties of imprisonment from one to six years, permanent disqualification from holding public office, and loss of the right to vote.
