A 17-YEAR-OLD male was rescued by the Davao City Police Office on Dec. 15, after being involved in an illegal drag race along MacArthur Highway in Barangay Bago Aplaya.
According to police reports, officers responded to a call from Central 911 regarding an ongoing drag race in the area. Upon arrival, they observed a group of motorcyclists preparing for a race. As the police approached, the motorcyclists fled the scene.
Police pursued the fleeing motorcyclists, eventually cornering one on Lubogan Road in Toril. The driver, a 17-year-old male student from Buhangin, was apprehended. The minor allegedly resisted arrest despite being rescued from a potentially dangerous situation.
He was subsequently taken into custody and referred to the Women and Children’s Protection Desk (WCPD) for appropriate intervention.
The police are now preparing charges against the minor’s parents or guardians for child abuse, specifically for allowing him to operate a motorcycle without a license and for participating in an illegal drag race.
Meanwhile, Captain Hazel Tuazon, the Davao City Police Office spokesperson, said the incident highlighted the dangers of illegal street racing and the importance of parental responsibility in ensuring the safety and well-being of minors.
