New EO to develop programs vs disasters

THE new executive order is set to strengthen the disaster resilience programs of the city as it also named new members to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DCDRRMC).

Although he signed last week Executive Order (EO) No. 35, Mayor Sebastian Duterte has to recommend four civil society organizations that will also become part of the council.

“The City Government of Davao should develop, promote, and implement a comprehensive Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan that aims to strengthen the capacity of the local government unit, together with partner stakeholders, to build disaster-resilient communities, and to institutionalize arrangements and measures for reducing disaster risks,” the new executive order stated.

Among the steps that the city government is developing  are “ projecting climate change risks, enhancing disaster preparedness, and developing response capabilities at all levels.”.

It also said that it is the city government’s responsibility to provide maximum care, assistance, and services to individuals and families affected by disasters, implement emergency rehabilitation projections to lessen the impact of disasters, and facilitate the resumption of normal social and economic activities.

According to EO 35, the local government, too, must engage the participation of other government institutions, Civil Society Organizations, the private sector, and volunteers in the LGU’s disaster risk reduction programs towards the proper use of resources and effective delivery of service to the citizenry.
