4th ID bids farewell to 16th IB after 8 years of combating insurgency in Mindanao

THE 4TH Infantry “Diamond” Division (4ID) honored the 16th Infantry “Maglilingkod” Battalion (16IB) in a farewell ceremony on June 21, 2024, at Camp Evangelista, Cagayan de Oro City.

The ceremony recognized the battalion’s significant contributions to counter-insurgency efforts in Northern Mindanao during their eight-year deployment.

Lieutenant Colonel Warren O. Daroy, 16IB’s commanding officer, received the Command Plaque and a Plaque of Recognition for the battalion’s role in promoting peace and development in Bukidnon.

Six personnel were also awarded the Military Merit Medal for their exceptional service, including their role in neutralizing members of the communist terrorist group (CTG).

Originally assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division in Luzon, the 16IB was redeployed to Mindanao in 2016. In 2021, they joined the 402nd Infantry Brigade under 4ID’s operational control.

The battalion is now returning to 2ID in Luzon as part of the Joint Task Force Katagalugan, due to the diminishing CTG threats in Mindanao and a shift in military strategy.

During their time in Mindanao, 16IB achieved notable successes, including the neutralization of high-ranking CTG leaders like Zaldy Galamiton (“Shaggy/Poldo”), Secretary of Sub-Regional Committee 1 of the North Central Mindanao Regional Committee, and Jhonjhon Ayuma Ramos (“Erbing”), Commanding Officer of SRSDG Eagles.

The battalion also partnered with local government units and stakeholders to implement programs aimed at helping former rebels reintegrate into society.

Major General Jose Maria R. Cuerpo II, commander of 4ID, expressed his gratitude for the battalion’s selfless service and commended their professionalism and bravery.

He highlighted their recent success in neutralizing the SRC commander as a testament to their dedication and strategic execution.
