By Kyla Ryanne Lumibao – ABOUT 3,500 families left their homes in Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte on Easter Sunday due to floods that hit the villages caused by heavy rains.
Based on the information from Mart Sambalud, municipal information officer, the 3,509 families, or 17,766 individuals, had to evacuate to a covered court in Barangay New Katipunan because of the rising water level.
The information said government agencies have been looking at the impact of the floods on the affected communities because, aside from rivers that swelled, also contributing to the problem was the clogged irrigation canals.
The affected residents were from Kinamayan, Casig-ang, San Miguel, Talomo, New Katipunan, Lunga-og, Kinamon, and Bobongon.
The municipal government under Mayor Ernest Evangelista and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office as well as other humanitarian groups have sent food packages and other emergency assistance to affected families.
