1st Philippine Asia Durian Summit launched to empower farmers and stakeholders

THE FIRST-EVER Philippine Asia Durian Summit, organized by the Durian Industry Association of Davao City (DIADC), aims to empower durian farmers and stakeholders to be globally competitive.

The summit will be held at the SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang Premier, Davao City on Oct. 25-27, 2023.

Emmanuel Belviz, DIADC president, said they invited speakers from different countries who will share outcomes and good practices.

“Ilang years na kasi tayong nagle-lecture (about durian), and paulit-ulit nalang ‘yung speakers natin. Ngayong first time na kami ang nag-organize, we wanted to get new ideas, specially dahil may export market na tayo, we really need to upgrade,” Belviz said,

The event will also showcase the newest tools, best techniques, advancements in durian production, and farming methods through a series of talks and workshops from regional and foreign experts.

Other interactions such as government-to-government (G2Gs) and business-to-business (B2Bs), will also be done with Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, and other international countries to collaborate and foster partnerships in the sector.

“This is the gist, if you look at the durian seasons per country, we do have different seasons, there is no reason to compete with each other, but there is a big chance to collaborate with each other,” Belviz added.

About 1,500 targeted participants will be attending, composed of durian growers, farmers, traders, consolidators, buyers and exporters, durian industry associations and cooperatives, local government units, packaging, machine, and equipment manufacturers, credit institutions and crop insurance representatives, fertilizers and pesticides manufacturers, allied sectors,  other government agencies, and small and midsize enterprises.

The three-day event will include plenary sessions, an exhibit, an open forum, and four locations for the field tour.
