1,000 police personnel fan out to secure Misa de Gallo

OVER 1,000 personnel from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) will be deployed starting Dec. 16 to ensure the safety of churchgoers attending Simbang Gabi.

Speaking at the Davao Peace and Security Press briefing at The Royal Mandaya Hotel on Wednesday, DCPO spokesperson Captain Hazel Tuazon said 1,013 personnel will be assigned to 43 churches across the city.

“We remind those attending Simbang Gabi to cooperate with our security personnel,” Tuazon said. “We will have a one-entrance, one-exit policy at churches, so there may be minor delays upon entering.”

She explained that this measure is for everyone’s safety and urged the public to avoid any disputes with security personnel. “Security teams will be in place two hours before each Mass. Please obey the guidelines to ensure a smooth and safe experience for all.”

Tuazon noted that last year some churchgoers expressed frustration with the security measures, causing delays and complaints. “The security protocols are implemented in coordination with various security units to ensure everyone’s safety,” she emphasized.

Simbang Gabi is a devotional nine-day series of Masses attended by Filipino Catholics in anticipation of Christmas.

Safety tips

The DCPO also shared some safety tips for residents before leaving their homes for Christmas. For instance, they should avoid posting photos on social media regarding their whereabouts.

Davaoeños are also encouraged to double-check the locks of their doors or windows and ask trusted neighbors to check on their houses while they are away.

Siyempre ang mga kawatan nangita lang na og chance or opportunity nga wala’y tao sa ilahang balay (Thieves and burlgars are only looking for a chance or opportunity when nobody is home),” she said.

“We always remind the public that when they go to public places or venues, they must not bring prohibited items. Davaoeños should also cooperate with our security forces,” Tuazon said.
