VICE PRESIDENT Sara Duterte revealed Saturday that her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, is still discussing with his legal team how to proceed with his oath-taking as mayor of Davao City.
Speaking to reporters, Vice President Duterte confirmed the ongoing deliberations.
“Yes, this is something that he is continually discussing. The oath-taking of former President Duterte is something that he is continually discussing with his lawyers,” she stated.
She further shared a recent conversation with her father on the matter. “And yesterday I asked him about it and he said that ‘I just want to talk to my lawyers about it.'”
Intriguingly, the Vice President then quoted what she perceived as her father’s broader message, seemingly directed at a wider audience: “But my personal feelings is that he was addressing it to, I think, the world. ‘You set me free, and I will take my oath,'” the Vice President quoted the former president as saying.
The specific position for which the former president is considering taking an oath as mayor of Davao City.
Former President Duterte recently won a mayoral election, adding to speculation about his future political activities as he is currently in The Hague.
On May 26, in an interview with national reporters, Interior and Local Governments Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla revealed that they intended to request the International Criminal Court (ICC) to allow Duterte to take his oath as Davao City mayor while under detention at The Hague.
“We recognize the victory of [former president Rodrigo Duterte]. Siya ang dineklara ng Comelec na mayor. Na-proclaim siya the day after the elections. Overwhelming mandate. So, we recognize him as the mayor,” the Secretary stated.
