- VP Sara visits shelter; gives aid to flood victims
VICE PRESIDENT Sara Duterte extended financial assistance to the residents in Barangay Bago Aplaya affected by last Wednesday’s heavy downpour.
The vice president, upon her visit to the temporary shelter, also had the chance to talk and take pictures with some residents in the area.
Duterte also talked with Barangay Chairman Isidro Dujali to know the status and other assistance her office can extend. Bago Aplaya was one of the hardest-hit barangays, along with seven other villages.
“Nibisita ta dinhi sa Brgy Aplaya tungod atong baha nahitabo tong nilabay adlaw. Gikamusta nato karon ang mga naa diri sa evacuation center dinhi sa eskwelahan pagkahuman. Atoang gipangutana kung kumusta Sila (We visited Barangay Aplaya because of the flood that occurred the other day. We are here at the evacuation center at the school after we asked how they were doing), Duterte said in an exclusive interview with the DXDC RMN-Davao.
“Ug pagkahuman atong giingon saila ha kung unsa atong mga assistance so karon naa ta dinhi maghatag ta ug financial assistance Kato sa mga pamilya nga nalista sa City Social welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) ug nila Kapitan (We are here to provide financial assistance to the families included on the list of the CSWDO and their chairman),” she added.
She said the Office of the Vice President’s satellite office in the city will continue to distribute relief goods in times of disasters.
Nearly 500 individuals were displaced when a thunderstorm triggered the swelling of the Lipadas River, which flooded eight barangays in the southern part of the city at midnight on Wednesday.
According to the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), 127 families of 454 individuals were advised to leave their homes and flee to higher ground to avoid a disaster.
The eight barangays are Bago Aplaya, Bago Gallera, Baliok, Catalunan Pequeño, Talomo Proper, Matina Aplaya, Ma-a, and Sto. Niño.
Meanwhile, barangay Matina Crossing, Dumoy Proper, Bago Aplaya, and Bucana also encountered severe street flooding, although the situation was not enough to warrant an evacuation.
The flood was caused by heavy rainfall due to the Easterlies/Localized Thunderstorms resulting in the increase of water level in the Lipadas River channel near Barangay Crossing Bayabas.
