UM founder to be honored by CPAs

LAWYER-entrepreneur Guillermo E. Torres Sr., founder of the University of Mindanao, will be recognized for his contribution to the accountancy profession as the country’s accountants celebrate the centenary of the profession this month.

To be awarded during the Centenary of the Accountancy Profession grand celebration at the Grand Ballroom of the Manila Hotel on March 17, Atty. Torres will be among the 100 notable Certified Public Accounts (CPAs) who will receive the award “as they have proven worthy of honor and emulation,” said Noe Quinanola, Professional Regulatory Board of Accountancy (PRBOA) chair, in his letter informing the family of Atty. Torres of the award on February 21.

“His (Atty. Torres’) integrity as well as his vital contributions to the development of the Accountancy profession and in nation-building through professional roles and tasks he had assumed and embarked on, are being recognized and spotlighted through this award which will be etched in gold in history books of the Philippine Accountancy milestones,” Quinanola added.

To receive the award on his behalf will be his son-namesake, Dr. Guillermo P. Torres Jr., now the president and chair of the university, considered the premier educational institution in Mindanao as it has also been recognized for its “quality, affordable and open education program,” the website of the university read.

Aside from UM, Atty. Torres was also behind the Mindanao Times and the University of Mindanao Broadcasting Network, operating several stations in the city and other areas of Mindanao and even Visayas.

Among the radio stations under the network are the ones based in the city, DXUM (formerly DXMC), Wild 92.3 FM, and Retro 95.5 FM.

Partnering with PRBOA in holding the celebration is the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and in cooperation with the Association of Certified Public Accountants in Commerce and Industry, Association of Certified Public Accountants in Public Practice, Government Association of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of Certified Public Accountants in Education.
