Truck driver, owner face charges in bridge collapse

THE DAVAO City Police Office (DCPO) said the truck driver and owner may face possible charges following the collapse of the Matina Pangi bridge on Oct. 19.

Tuazon stated, “The driver has been identified, as well as the truck owner. We are currently waiting for the company to file a case. We expect liability to fall on either the barangay or the local government of our city; the investigation has already been completed.”

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident.

“Charges will be filed against the truck driver and possibly the owner for the damages,” she added. “The driver was aware that the truck was overloaded when crossing the bridge.”

She indicated they might face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property.

According to the investigation, the 10-wheeler truck was traveling along Matina Pangi Road from Carlos P. Garcia Highway toward Barangay Matina Pangi. Upon reaching Iñigo Village, the driver made a left turn onto the metal/steel bridge, which then collapsed, causing the truck to fall into the river below.

Barangay officials noted that loaded trucks are not permitted to cross the bridge due to its five-ton capacity, and it was reportedly already in a dilapidated state before the incident.
