Trapped in fire

A DEVASTATING fire blanketed a residential area in Barangay 2-A with flames and smoke at around 1:25 p.m. on July 13, claiming the lives of two young boys and injuring another teenager.

Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) XI spokesperson Sr. Insp. Frances Mae Sendrijas said the fire quickly escalated to a third alarm, consuming an estimated 150 houses and displacing 203 families.

Sendrijas said two boys, aged 11 and 14, were tragically killed in the blaze, while a 17-year-old boy sustained injuries.

Firefighters from the CB Bangoy Fire Station battled the flames for several hours before finally declaring a fire-out at 1:05 a.m.

The BFP XI placed the estimated damage at P2.25 million, while the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Moreover, the fire victims were temporarily sheltered in modular tents at the evacuation center in Magallanes Elementary School and the gymnasium at the back of the Grand Men Seng Hotel.

Teams from the City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Health Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office together with the Office of the First Congressional District, barangay council, and other frontline agencies and other agencies are already on-site to attend to the needs of the affected residents, including hot meals and financial assistance.
