  • Fire rips through abandoned theater in Davao City

 

THE DESERTED New Davao Theater, an iconic building along C.M. Recto Street, was engulfed in flames at approximately 6:36 a.m. on Friday, May 31. 

The flames quickly spread to neighboring buildings, the abandoned Davao Hotel and Davao Electronic Center.

New Davao Theater, along with other cinema houses Lawaan, Odeon, Eagle, Cine Rama, used to litter C.M. Recto Street. They had their heyday during the 80s and 90s until Victoria Plaza introduced cinemas inside a shopping mall, 

Firefighters from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Barangay Firefighter Volunteers, and Central 911 responded swiftly to the scene and extinguished the flames by 10 a.m.

FO1 Eunelle Jun U. Mabale, fire investigator of C.B. Bangoy Sr. Fire Station, said they are still investigating the cause of the incident.

Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or injuries from the incident. Meanwhile, investigators have yet to determine the estimated damage.
