The offer of a steel manufacturer to donate steel plant boxes to the city government is a very generous gesture from a private entity that we should not let it passed without saying hurray as the intention is to beautify the city’s thoroughfares.
But the city as recipient of the donation should always be consistent in honoring its part in whatever condition it entered with the donor. Meaning, we should not be “ningas cogon” that after the ceremonial turnover and officially received the donation for a certain project, the enthusiasm of the city officials vanished in thin air only after a few months. Maintenance of the donation is already a forgotten word.
And this not only happened to donation by any individual or entities but as well as those funded by the taxpayers money in the past.
Look at the traffic signal lights the local government spent so much funding in buying and stalling in almost intersections of city thoroughfares and highways to lessen the job of traffic enforcers in maintaining traffic while giving sanity to many crazy motorists.
A donor country (Is it Japan?) also donated to the city traffic lights with cameras that can monitor speed limits of motorists.
But look at the condition of these traffic signal lights in some major roads and highways in the city nowadays, particularly from the intersections of Roxas Blvd. – C.M. Recto all the way to R. Magsaysay Rotonda. Then after F. Torres all the way to Victoria Plaza in Bajada, the signal lights in these areas remind us that Christmas is here with us the whole year round because traffic lights twinkling non-stop 24/7.
Most of the time, I notice that the traffic light at the intersection of Bajada-Cabaguio Avenue to Dumanlas (fronting Southern Philippines Medical Center) although in good condition has to intentionally shut off and let manual traffic to operate because the time limit allotted to green (Go), yellow (prepare to Stop), and red (Full Stopped) seems not properly adjusted to the volume of vehicles and pedestrians passing through this busy crossing.
In a country where I just enjoyed my four-month vacation recently, all traffic signal lights were properly maintained by the cities or states they belong. You can’t find a single traffic lights operating abnormally twinkling like Christmas lights.
We seldom see law enforcers manning traffic or walking around. But most of the time they were there in mobile cars hiding from nowhere while monitoring speed limits of crazy motorists. Yes, many American motorists are also like Pinoy drivers. Mga sira ulo rin!
And what happened to our imported trash bins (some were also donated) the city also eagerly funded with substantial amounts and distributed in major thoroughfares and barangays to discipline households on the proper disposal of trash? After some of our undisciplined garbage truck collectors emptied them with contents and didn’t handle them with care while dumping back to the street sides, the poor bins did not last for long and destroyed, and some were even found in junk shops sold by scavengers.
The Steel Asia Manufacturing Corporation, through its CEO Benjamin Yao, will enter into a memorandum of agreement with the city for the donation of 330 units of steel plant boxes to be installed in Buhangin and Agdao flyover with potted ornamental plants to be maintained by the city.
Thank you, Steel Asia! But do we expect the city to give justice to that donation by maintaining the beauty of that flyover and let the plants grow? I hope this time, it will!

President Duterte has assured the public that newly appointed Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Gerald Bantag will clean up the bureau being a former regional director of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penelogy (BJMP). The new BuCor chief ‘knows his business,’ Duterte said.
I only know Bantag when his name was announced as a replacement to former BuCor chief Nicanor Faeldon who was dismissed by the President by disobeying his order to stop the release of almost 2,000 heinous crimes convicts under the controversial Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law.
But compared to his former predecessors-Police General and now Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa and former Bureau of Customs chief Rafael Faeldon, I prepared Bantag over them being in the prison job for quite a time and a “professional” in dealing with prison life as he was jail warden when an explosion occurred at the Paranaque City Jail in 2016.
Prior to his appointment as BuCor chief, Bantag is head of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penelogy in Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.
With this qualifications and experiences as reported, I hope Bantag will not fail the President, particularly the public in general.
