- Road closures for INC peace rally on Jan. 13
AN IGLESIA ni Cristo official expects between 300,000 and 500,000 members who will flock to Davao City to attend the simultaneous nationwide peace rally at San Pedro Square on Jan. 13
On Tuesday’s regular session, Jan. 7, the 20th City Council approved the measure to partially close San Pedro Street Street, C.M. Recto Avenue, Pelayo Street, Iñigo Street, C. Bangoy Street, Rizal Street, Bonifacio Street, and Palma Gil Street will be partially from 9 p.m. on Jan. 11, 2025, to 4 a.m on Jan. 12 for the preparation.
Meanwhile, the same roads will be fully closed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the program proper, which will be in San Pedro Square.
Also, the Davao City Coastal Road from Tulip Drive to Bago Aplaya will be partially closed on Jan. 13 to serve as parking space for the vehicles of the attending INC members.
Bong Estudillo, INC Region XI legal officer, said they have members from 12 local districts of Region 11 and Region 12 who committed to attend the activity.
At present, Estudillo said there are 100 buses from Davao del Norte and 120 buses from Sultan Kudarat that will ferry the members.
“Ang purpose po ng aming rally ay para po sa kapayapaan, para aming maipahayag ang aming damdamin sa mga tao lalo na sa sambayanang Pilipino maging sa pamahalaan na sang-ayon kami sa opinyon ng ating Pangulong Marcos Jr. na hindi siya pabor sa impeachment laban sa ating Pangalawang Pangulong Inday Sara Duterte (The purpose of our rally is for peace and for us to voice our sentiments and also our agreement with President Marcos Jr. that he’s no in favor of the impeachment against Vice President Inday Sara Duterte),” Estudillo said during the deliberation of the road closure in the 1st regular session of the City Council.
Estudillo added they prepared for the event for almost a month starting with a letter addressed to Mayor Sebastian Duterte dated Dec. 20, 2024, asking permission to hold the prayer rally.
Dionisio Abude, City Transport and Traffic Management Office, said they would deploy enough personnel to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. They would soon disseminate the advisory on road closures and alternative routes on the CTTMO Facebook page.
Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre also passed a colloraly resolution supporting the event and recommending a skeletal workforce on Jan. 13, which was also passed during the session.
