- Vehicular crashes, road incidents rose in 2023 – DCPO
THE NUMBER of road incidents in the city slightly increased to 5,678 in 2023 compared to 5,381 cases from January to December of 2022, Davao City Police Office (DCPO) data revealed.
During the AFP-PNP Press briefing held at The Royal Mandaya Hotel on Jan. 10, DCPO spokesperson Captain Hazel Tuazon said the number of vehicles involved in collisions and crashes was also 997 higher last year than in 2022.
The records showed a 6% increase in the number of incidents and an 11% uptick in the vehicles involved from January to December 2023 against the same period in 2022.
The police cited several possible reasons for the higher number of road incidents, including the lifting of the IATF guidelines after the COVID-19 pandemic, the full resumption of face-to-face classes, and the resumption of the economy.
Meanwhile, this month is on trend to surpass the numbers in January 2023 as the police already recorded 113 incidents of vehicle property damage as of Jan. 10 against the 121 for January 2022.
In addition, there were three deaths resulting from a vehicular incident this month compared to two in January last year. Finally, 27 people sustained injuries for the first 10 days of January 2024 against the 39 recorded for the entire month of January last year.
Most accidents occurred along Carlos P. Garcia Highway, MacArthur Highway, JP Laurel, and Quimpo Boulevard.
