‘Seriously considering’

  • VP Sara Duterte stops playing coy on 2028 presidential plans

AFTER dodging questions about her future political plans multiple times, Vice President Sara Duterte doubled down on her statement about running for president in the 2028 National Elections.

“I’m seriously considering running in the 2028 presidential elections because of the issues we see in our country that need fixing, that need change,” Duterte told News5 in an exclusive interview during a private event in Panabo, Davao del Norte on Feb. 1, 2025.

Kailangan maging competitive tayo sa mga kapitbahay natin dito sa ating region at sa buong mundo. Napag-iiwanan na ang Pilipinas at ayaw natin ‘yun (We need to be competitive with our regional and global neighbors. The Philippines is being left behind and we don’t want that),” she added.

The vice president is currently facing three impeachment complaints, all accusing her of betrayal of public trust, among others, over the alleged misuse of her confidential funds.

Still, Duterte remains the frontrunner for the president in the 2028 elections.

When asked about her participation in the upcoming 2025 Mid-term Elections, she explained she is still weighing her options.

Hindi ko alam kung makakatulong o makakasama sa mga kandidato ang pag-endorso ko sa kanila. Kaya pinag-iisipan ko ‘yun nang maayos (I don’t know if my endorsing the candidates will help or destroy them, so I’m thinking it over),” she added.

Earlier last month, Duterte revealed during her visit to the Office of the Vice President (OVP) for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Japan, that she is considering running in the 2028 Presidential election.

She stated that the country cannot simply be left to continue its “backslide.”

Previously, Duterte consistently said that she would make her announcement whether to run for president in 2026.
