- Major streets overflow with Iglesia Ni Cristo members in massive peace rally
THOUSANDS of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) faithful marched to San Pedro Square in the downtown area in a massive show of force for peace on Monday, Jan. 13.
The “National Rally for Peace,” a simultaneous activity in major cities across the nation, drew a crowd estimated to reach over 200,000, according to the Davao City Police Office.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), on the other hand, placed the number at 230,000.
The INC members started trickling in just before sunrise. They marched with placards and banners spreading messages of peace and solidarity. The event also featured musical performances and speeches from church leaders.
As of 2 p.m., the office reported 228 individuals who received medical attention at the event. Most cases involved body weakness and dizziness, likely due to the large crowds and warm weather. While most patients were treated on-site, four individuals required transport to a medical facility.
A heavy security presence was visible throughout the city, with around 5,000 law enforcers, force multipliers, and volunteers working to ensure the safety of the attendees.
The DCPO said that apart from some traffic congestion in some areas, the overall atmosphere has been peaceful and positive.
