Baste gives city police chief a chance amid misgivings on DCPO shakeup

MAYOR Sebastian Duterte has given newly appointed police chief Colonel Hansel Marantan a chance to prove himself despite initial concerns over the abrupt leadership change.

During his State of the City Address on Aug. 6, Duterte expressed frustration over the national administration’s interference in local affairs, citing the sudden change in DCPO leadership. However, he said he is willing to allow Marantan to maintain the city’s peace and order.

“As long as the job is done, the status quo is maintained, which all of us want, we are satisfied with the current status of our peace and order situation if it is maintained, we have no problem with that,” Duterte said.

The mayor also stressed that it’s “too early to tell” regarding the recent shake-up within the Davao City Police Office, acknowledging the influence of politics in such decisions.

Meanwhile, Davao City police acting director Col Hansel Marantan welcomed  Mayor Sebastian Duterte’s statement that he would be given a chance to serve the city.

During the Davao Peace and Security Press Corps press conference held at The Royal Mandaya Hotel on Wednesday, August 7, Captain Hazel Tuazon, spokesperson for the Davao City Police Office, said even though the city director was not present at the SOCA (State of the City Address), he was happy with Duterte’s statement and assured the official that he would reciprocate with good service to the city and its people.

Previously, Duterte expressed confusion over the rapid leadership changes within the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), questioning why he wasn’t involved in the selection process as is customary for appointing a city director.

This concern was particularly heightened by Marantan’s appointment, as the mayor was unfamiliar with his background.

In a July 16 address to lawmakers, Marantan acknowledged the situation and appealed for an opportunity to prove his worth to the city.

“I think the challenge for me now is to prove more to merit your acceptance in Davao City,” he stated, recognizing the city’s reputation for peacefulness.

Last July 25, Col Marantan, formally introduced himself to Mayor Sebastian Duterte during a courtesy call at Matina Enclaves.

“My meeting with Mayor Duterte was very fruitful,” he said.

“The mayor’s message was clear: protect the people of Davao. This was my first time meeting him, and it was very productive,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Davao City Police Office will continue to strive to maintain peace and order in the city by continuing the good programs and initiatives of the DCPO.
