- Baste says politicians and candidates must remain loyal to political parties
MAYOR Sebastian Duterte emphasized the significance of loyalty and commitment to a political party as the Hungpong sa Tawong Lungsod (HTL) dropped several local politicians from its membership roster.
In “Basta Dabawenyo,” the mayor said he would never turn his back on HTL or the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP–Laban) until his death.
He does not support party-hopping because he values a long-term relationship built on loyalty, despite the challenges faced within the party.
Party-hopping is another term for political butterfly, referring to a member who flits from one party to another.
Recently, HTL announced the removal of incumbent 2nd District Councilor Javi Garcia-Campos from the party, who is running for 2nd district congressman under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas political party.
Also, the party expulsed councilors Wilberto Al-ag, Bernard Al-Ag, and Toril Barangay chairwoman Lilibeth Al-ag and Bernadette Al-ag for reportedly allying with Tingog Party-List, the party started by House Speaker Martin Romualdez and his wife Rep. Yedda Romualdez.
The party said, “The Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod values transparency, integrity, and loyalty as a cornerstone of our political parties.”
The party statement said that the alliance was a clear violation of Article 7, Section 6(b) of its constitution.
“We must also address the troubling reality that the current national administration has failed to provide essential funding to local officials loyal to the Duterte legacy. In this context, some members of Hugpong have been tempted with significant budget offers in exchange for their allegiance to rival factions,” the HTL statement said.
For his part, the mayor said, “We appreciate the continued support of our members and encourage everyone to stay united as we work towards the betterment of our community. Together, we will remain steadfast in our dedication to serving the people of Davao.”
