ALMOST 3,000 incidents, representing a 30% percent increase, in road-related cases were recorded in the city this year against the same period in 2022.
During the AFP-PNP Press Corps Wednesday, Major Dexter Domingo, chief of the Davao City Police Office-Traffic Enforcement Unit, said from January to June 2023, they monitored 2,942 road incidents compared to 2,251 for the first half of 2022.
Domingo said the main causes were human error, violating the traffic law, or driving under the influence of alcohol.
In addition to this, the number of vehicle incidents also increased by 20% since there were 5,086 this year compared to 4,033 last year.
Meanwhile, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) vowed to give justice to the family of the hit-and-run victim.
Domingo said they received a directive from city director Col. Alberto Lupaz to solve those case as soon as possible.
On Sunday, July 9, a motorcycle driver Ruben Borgonia and victim Mark Ken Suarez Mariscal, who worked at Salford College Australia and a resident of Deca Homes, Barangay Indangan, stopped near the Barangay Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office to pee.
However, Mariscal lost his balance as he got off the motorcycle and fell on the road. Borgonia tried to stop an approaching white vehicle, but it ran over the victim. Instead of stopping, however, the driver sped off toward Indangan.
The responding Central 911 ambulance immediately brought the victim to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) for medical attention, but he was already dead even before he arrived.
