Philippine Eagle Foundation to expand breeding sanctuary

THE PHILIPPINE Eagle Foundation is expanding the National Bird Breeding Sanctuary (NBBS) to shelter eight more forest raptors.

During an interview at the PEP Talks in SM Lanang on May 28, PEF marketing coordinator, Tristan Montemor said they are now starting building phase 2 of the facility, located in Eden, Toril, to house more Philippine Eagles from the original capacity of 16.

“What we are planning right now is the initial phase of that transfer (breeding sanctuary) or that parang revamp. So right now, we are making new signage (Philippine Eagle Center), we’re starting small. We are revamping mga old buildings or mga old structures at the facility and then we are making it safe and accessible for everyone,” he said.

He said they must raise P10 million since each breeding chamber costs approximately P2 million while the materials and labor costs can reach P1 million.

Once phase two is finished, the rest of the breeding eagles will be transferred to the facility and closed to the public for safety reasons.

“The Transfer Breeding Eagles campaign, it was planned last year gyud and then there was always a Phase 2 for the campaign. So, na plano gyud siya from the start,” he said.

The NBBS isolates and protects the Philippine Eagles from potential sources of diseases, environmental pollutants, and other threats. The facility’s development began in 2021 and the construction of cages in 2023. On Feb 13, 2024, eight Philippines Eagles were transferred to the facility.

The Philippine Eagle population is currently at an estimated 392, according to a study published by the PEF and The Peregrine Fund in 2023.
