Pedestrian faces rap

  • Police to file charges in fatal truck driver and helper’s death near airport

THE DAVAO City Police Office (DCPO) announced plans to file charges against a lady pedestrian and a public utility jeepney (PUJ) driver following the fatal death of a truck driver and helper.

The incident occurred near the cargo entrance of Francisco Bangoy International Airport along Carlos P. Garcia Highway at 2:55 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25.

According to Captain Hazel Tuazon, spokesperson for the DCPO, the 32-year-old pedestrian crossed the road while the light was still green thereby putting herself directly on the crosshairs of the cargo truck.

(The police identified the pedestrian but TIMES will withhold her name to avoid unnecessary online attacks.)

The driver, Nestor Dela Cruz Doronio, 56, braked abruptly to avoid hitting the pedestrian. Unfortunately, the loaded sheet metal shifted forward and pinned the driver and helper, identified as 24-year-old Kr Salem Rasonable

Tuazon said the pedestrian will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. The CCTV footage showing her crossing the road illegally would be used as evidence against the suspect.

Meanwhile, the PUJ driver, who has yet to be identified, is also not off the hook.

The driver violated Republic Act 4136 (Traffic laws) by stopping at the crosswalk and allowing the pedestrian to disembark in an unsafe location.

The DCPO is also investigating the possibility of filing charges against the company that owns the truck.

“We want to ensure fairness and hold all responsible parties accountable,” Tuazon stated at the Davao Peace and Security Press Corps press conference held at The Royal Mandaya Hotel on Wednesday, June 26.
