THE PHILIPPINE Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced that some parts of the Davao Region may expect dry conditions as there will be a 60% reduction in rainfall by the end of April 2024.
During the Agribiz forum on Apr. 23, Engr. Lolita Vinalay, PAGASA Davao Meteorological officer chief, said the region’s rainfall reduction will persist for two successive months.
“Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao City, by the end of April, the province will experience a dry condition according to the forecast. Davao Oriental and Davao Occidental will be in dry spell condition. No areas here in the Davao region will experience being under drought conditions,” Vinalay said.
According to the PAGASA’s 170th Climate Forum Outlook for April to September 2024, “drought is defined as 3-consecutive months of way below normal rainfall conditions; dry spell is defined as 3-consecutive months of below normal rainfall conditions; and dry condition is defined as 2-consecutive months of below normal rainfall condition.”
Meanwhile, Vinalay mentioned that based on their forecast, there are still no reported tropical cyclones observed to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as of January up to the present.
“The impact of El Nino in our country shows that kakaunti lang ang bagyo na pumoporma o pumapasok sa PAR during the season. Only 2-3 tropical cyclones,” she said.
She added that as La Nina nears, the country will soon expect more tropical cyclones that may affect or cause damage in some parts of the country.
