A LAWMAKER said on Tuesday the proposed ordinance operationalizing Co Su Gian Home for the Aged is being ironed out for a second reading in the 20th City Council.
Councilor Wilberto Al-ag, committee chair on social services, said the ordinance will improve the existing facility allowing it to cater to more clients in their twilight years.
Al-ag said the ordinance seeks to appropriate funds for the staff to sustain the operation.
“Kinahanglan nato didto og plantilla positions, under the umbrella of CSWDO para mao’y mo-manage,” he said during the Aprubado sa Konseho.
Al-ag said Co Su Gian relies on the City Social Welfare and Development Office and private donations to sustain the daily needs of its wards. The facility has been operating for almost 31 years and presently houses more than 50 elderly.
Some of the elderly in the facility are reintegrated back into their families. However, those neglected, abandoned, and rescued from the streets permanently stay in the center.
Co Su Gian Home for the Aged is located in Barangay Cabantian, Buhangin District, and is the only local government residential care facility that provides 24-hour care service. Aside from residential care, the elderly also receive medical and rehabilitative services, spiritual support, and companionship from caretakers when their own families cannot do so.
Henry Wee, a Chinese national, donated the lot and named the facility after his mother, who started as a place of convergence for the Davao City Senior Citizens Federation in the 1980s until it was converted into a temporary shelter in the 1990s.
