One-strike policy

Police commanders risk losing jobs if politicians hurt or killed under their watch

By Rhoda Grace B. Saron

THE REGION’S top cop has ordered a “one-strike policy” for police commanders in cities and towns, which means their jobs are on the line if politicians in their area get hurt or killed.

Major Eudisan Gultiano, the spokesperson of PRO XI, made this revelation during the AFP-PNP Press briefing on Wednesday at The Royal Mandaya hotel.

“For the protection of the elected politicians, our regional director Brig Gen Benjamin Silo Jr. ordered directive of a “one-strike policy,” which means that if there will be a politician that will be hurt, injured, or killed in their area of responsibility, immediately the chief of police or commander will be relieved from his post,” Gultiano said.

“Because we wanted to prevent incidents that happened in Negros Oriental. That’s why we put the responsibility to our commanders, particularly for the prevention that no politicians will be hurt here in Davao region,” she added.

But again, she explained that the stand of the PNP (Philippine National Police) is that no connection exists between the different cases of attacks on politicians.

Moreover, Gultiano said they hadn’t monitored private armed groups here in the region.

“We are very fortunate here in Davao Region that we don’t have very intense political rivalries, and our politicians here are peace-loving. Rest assured that the entire Police Regional Office XI will provide security for Davao Region and people who want to attend activities here. They will be safe and secured here in our area,” she said.

However, she said they need to follow security protocols to prevent untoward incidents during any activities.
