Not stepping down

VICE PRESIDENT Sara Duterte asserted that resignation is not an option amid her impeachment case as she urged the public to continue praying and believing since the people will prevail in the end.

“God save the Philippines,” she said during a press conference at the Office of the Vice President headquarters on Friday, Feb. 7. “To all those praying, supporting, trusting, and continuously loving me, please have faith because the true victory belongs to the people.”

When asked how she was doing, the Vice President replied, “I’m okay.”

While she did not respond to the question of whether she saw the list of the 215 lawmakers who voted to impeach her, she said that she was hardly surprised by the turn of events.

She recounted that the moves to oust her started when France Castro announced the impeachment in November 2023.

When asked about the possibility of resignation, she responded, “We are not there yet. It’s still too early for those kinds of matters. We are still at the stage of reviewing things. Actually, the lawyers are the ones working on it. I don’t really know what they are doing, but I have a meeting with them.”

However, at this point, she said resignation was not an option.

She also declined to answer if she believed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s earlier statement about not having a hand in the impeachment case.

“You know, it’s even more painful to be left by a boyfriend or girlfriend than to be impeached by the House of Representatives,” Duterte said.

She also mentioned that she has not yet spoken to former President Rodrigo Duterte about the impeachment case but has sent him a message through his assistant, telling him, “Everything will be alright.”

“His reply was a song, ‘MacArthur Park.’ He sent a video of himself singing it,” she added.

She said she was overwhelmed by the number of lawyers who volunteered to defend her. “So now, we are discussing how to proceed and secure their commitment to support, so they can also help in planning the defense,” she further explained.

On the topic of former President Rodrigo Duterte being part of her defense team, she said, “He is welcome because he is a lawyer, so he is welcome to give his advice and contribute to the defense.”
