NAPC commemorates International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

THE NATIONAL Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) honored victims of extreme poverty in this year’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP).

In the wreath-laying ceremony on Thursday, October 17 at Leon Garcia Sr. Barangay Hall here, NAPC gathered all sectors to underscore how poverty eradication must be a multi-stakeholder effort.

This year’s edition is themed, “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment: Acting Together for Just, Peaceful, and Inclusive Societies,” highlighting the effects of social and institutional maltreatment on people living in poverty.

“It urges people to act together in pursuing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 by promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies,” the press release reads.

NAPC Assistant Secretary Mary Rose Villaflor and Cooperatives Sectoral Representative Sofronio Talisic, along with the city government officials, graced the wreath-laying ceremony.

The annual observance of IDEP was adopted in the country through Proclamation No. 269 signed by the late President Fidel Ramos on Oct. 4, 1993, declaring Oct. 17 of every year as the National Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo also signed Proclamation No. 717 on Oct. 18, 2004, mandating Oct. 17-23 of each year as the National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty.
