  • Abandoned newborn rescued; letter pleads to never change baby’s name

A MALE infant, stuffed in a paper boutique bag with the umbilical cord still attached, was rescued by the police in Matina Aplaya on March 20, 2025.

While rescuing abandoned infants is nothing new to authorities, this one carries a poignant surprise.

The bag contained a letter, penned by the infant’s mother and introduced “Brian Drake” to his would-be rescuers,

“Please treat him with love and care just like your own. Provide him something that he needs because for now we can’t afford to raise him,” the letter read.

The mother also apologized for passing on their responsibility to others. Lastly, the letter made one last request:

“Please don’t change his name!”

At approximately 5:30 a.m., Police Station 15 (PS15) received a distress call from Central 911 regarding the abandoned infant, located at 011 Singkil St., Lanzona Subdivision.

Responding swiftly, a team led by station commander Major Butch Kiven Rapiz and the station’s Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) rushed to the scene.

Magdalena Natividad, a resident of the address, recounted hearing a baby’s cries around 5 a.m. Following the sound, she and her nephew discovered a bag containing the newborn.

The infant was promptly rescued by PS15 personnel and transported via Central 911 Ambulance No. 01 to Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) for vital newborn screening and medical evaluation.

SPMC’s Pediatric Ward reported the infant as in stable condition, weighing 2.9 kilos, and is under observation. Dr. Elyssa Teofilo is attending to the baby.

PCpl Johanna Autida and PSSg Jefferson Gadia have been assigned as investigating officers. Meanwhile, police have assured that further updates will be released as the investigation is being conducted.
