MinDA clarifies Bucana bridge now 20% complete

BUCANA bridge is 20% complete and on track for completion in 2025, an official from Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) official said on Saturday, June 1.

MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso Magno issued the statement following a recent report quoting an official from the Department of Public Works and Highways-Davao Region (DPWH-Davao) that the bridge will be delayed up to 2026.

“DPWH Undersecretary Emil Sadain has personally informed me that the project is, in fact, ahead of schedule, currently at 20% completion,” Magno said.

The official added that the project commenced in the second quarter of 2024 and with a target construction period of 18 months, he said it is on track for completion by the end of 2025.

“Construction will proceed without interruption as the project is funded through a grant from China Eximbank,” the post added.

The Bucana Bridge project started in November 2023 following the signing of the civil works contract between DPWH and China Road and Bridge Corporation, the same company constructing the Samal-Davao City Connector project.

Juby Cordon, DPWH XI regional director reported on Tuesday, May 28, Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, the construction of the bridge is 15.694% complete.

The bridge is a four-lane, six-span extra-dosed bridge spanning 1.34-kilometer, including approach roads traversing from Roxas Avenue to Bago Aplaya and is an integral part of the Davao City Coastal Bypass Road.

The bridge, once completed, will reduce travel time by 30 minutes from Junction Davao-Cotabato Road (Bago Gallera Section) to R. Castillo Avenue (downtown area) and vice versa.

The bridge holds approximately about 35,000 vehicles daily, complementing the Davao City Coastal Road easing traffic congestion in coastal areas.
