THE JUNIOR Chamber International (JCI) concluded its 57th annual Most Outstanding High School Graduate (MOHSG) program. This year’s “We are Active Citizens” theme focused on encouraging students to take initiative and create impactful contributions to their communities.
MOHSG winner Ishi Mae Lequin of Daniel R. Aguinaldo High School implemented “Project Right: Filipino,” which establishes fundamental learnings among the youth of Barangay Sto. Niño, Tugbok, Davao City.
“Coming out of the pandemic, the retention of students is declining… their ability to recognize and learn, especially in mathematics and science, is actually declining,” Lequin said.
Project Right teaches math and science lessons through engaging activities. School-based activities are conducted every Friday with focus group discussions to assess students’ weak points.
The project also extends beyond the academic walls with its community-based implementation conducted every Saturday. The timetable is designed to provide a feasible learning schedule for children during the summer break.
“So far, students have been engaging well with our activities,” Lequin said. The project assesses students’ learning points through evaluation forms embedded in their modules.
At present, the project only focuses on Barangay Sto. Niño students, though Lequin is keen on extending the endeavor to greater areas through partnerships with parents and other stakeholders.
“We remain grateful for our partnership with JCI as we continue to make this project sustainable and long-lasting,” Lequin stated.
The top ten students of the program were given scholarships from different universities in Davao City.
‘We want to veer away from the idea na ‘Most Outstanding Graduate’ mag compete ang mga skwelahan. We as JCI want to empower these students from the various schools. As much as we want them to pay it forward with their respective schools where they are right now since they are graduating, it’s more of them paying it forward wherever they will be after high school” MOHSG chairman John Chin stated.
The JCI remains perseverant in working with acclaimed students to empower communities.
