THE IMPEACHMENT complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte has reached enough signatures in the House of Representatives to be endorsed to the Senate, according to House Secretary General Reginald Velasco.
In a press conference with House media on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025, Velasco declined to disclose the exact number of representatives who signed the complaint, stating that the official announcement would be made during the plenary session.
House rules stipulate that at least one-third of the total House membership, or 103 representatives, must sign an impeachment complaint for it to be forwarded to the Senate for trial.
Meanwhile, Senate President Chiz Escudero addressed reports of the Senate preparing for the impeachment proceedings.
“The Senate is not preparing for anything re impeachment,” Escudero stated.
“We cannot and will not assume anything until and unless it is a fact. The statements made by an over-eager staff were not authorized by me nor was it proper…”
Escudero suggested that the Senate is taking a cautious approach and will not formally prepare for the impeachment trial until they officially receive the articles of impeachment from the House.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Vice President has not yet issued a statement regarding the matter.
In December last year, At Dutertes’ annual gift-giving activity, the vice president said her father would help her legal team in the impeachment cases against her.
“He said that since I wouldn’t accept the money, he would act as my lawyer. So, he will be a collaborating counsel for all the cases,” the vice president said, adding that the former president was preparing his documents to be submitted to the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.
Rep. Paolo Duterte’s on impeachment moves vs VP
I am appalled and enraged by the desperate and politically motivated efforts to railroad the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.
The sinister maneuvering of certain lawmakers, led by Rep. Garin, to hastily collect signatures and push for the immediate approval and transmittal of this baseless impeachment case is a clear act of political persecution.
This administration is treading on dangerous ground. If they were unfazed by the over one million rallying supporters of the Iglesia Ni Cristo, then they are blindly marching toward an even greater storm—one that could shake the very foundation of their rule.
The Filipino people will not sit idly by as this government undermines democracy and silences opposition through fabricated accusations.
If the Marcos administration thinks it can push this sham impeachment without consequence, they are gravely mistaken.
This is not just about VP Sara Duterte—this is about the will of the Filipino people. The growing discontent and frustration across the country will not be contained for long. Mark my words: this reckless abuse of power will not end in their favor.
