A 14-YEAR-OLD grade 9 student found himself in hot water for possession of an unlicensed gun at Takepan National High School in Barangay Takepan, Pikit, Cotabato, on Sept. 22.
According to the report from the 90th Infantry (Bigkis-Lahi) Battalion, soldiers were patroling the Takepan Public Market when they were alerted to the presence of a student carrying a firearm on Friday.
Upon further investigation, the suspect was found to have an unlicensed firearm identified as a modified 5.56mm pistol.
Authorities apprehended the young suspect and handed him over to the Pikit Municipal Police Station.
Lt. Col. Rowel Gavilanes, commanding officer of 90IB, said the incident raised concerns among school officials, parents, and local authorities, highlighting the need for increased vigilance in schools to ensure the safety of students.
“The school administration is cooperating fully with the authorities in our investigation to determine how the student came into possession of the illegal firearm and if there are any additional individuals involved,” she said.
Both the Pikit Municipal Police Station and 90IB stressed the importance of education and awareness programs to discourage students from engaging in illegal activities.
“The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to keep schools safe and maintain weapons-free environments for youth,” he said.
Local authorities are working to track the origin of the firearm.
Major General Alex S. Rillera, commander of 6ID at JTF Central, emphasized the significance of maintaining a secure educational environment for all students.
