New word phrases describing different situations emerge every now and then in the world of millennial romance. We gather a few of the most recent and lingering ones to update the curious.
ORBITING. The act of orbiting is one where a person still engages with you despite the fact you’re no longer an item. Potentially they will interact with you on social media. This might take the form of likes or comments. In essence, they are out of your life but still have some presence in that they orbit your social sphere.
BIRD BOXING. Much like Netfilx’s thriller Bird Box, which sees Sandra Bullock struggles to survive wearing a blindfold at all times, the concept of bird boxing refers to “when someone is blind to how rubbish the person they’re dating is”.
PROWLING. Prowling describes behavior that might see a person you’re dating to be interested and available for a period before they disappear entirely. However, they will of course resurface but only once you’ve given up.
GHOSTING. The term ‘ghosting’, which was coined in 2014, is when someone suddenly vanishes into thin air to avoid the awkward break up conversation.
COOKIE JARRING. This term refers to the practice of dating a person you’ve put in a reserve position while you’re dating someone else.
CATFISHING. Catfishing is a type of deceptive activity where a person creates a fake identity on a social network account, usually targeting a specific victim for deception. Catfishing is often employed for romance scams on dating websites. Catfishing may be used for financial gain, to compromise a victim in some way, or simply as a form of trolling or wish fulfillment.
KITTENFISHING. If you’re purposely using images of yourself as a younger person or lie about your age, weight, height or job, then you’re kittenfishing (huffpost.com images).
VULTURING. “Becoming much more romantically interested in someone when you sense their current relationship is about to breakup, then swooping in to pick up the pieces”
GRANDE-ING. A personal celebration after a break up, recently made popular by pop sensation Ariana Grande. Practicing gratefulness at the end of a relationship and rejecting negativity and bitterness as you move forward with your life. Thank u, next.
THRONING. Dating someone just to boost your personal profile or reputation.
ZOMBIE-ING. This is when a person who ghosted their date suddenly reappears and acts like nothing has happened and continues where they left off.
BENCHING. This is when daters are not ‘into’ someone enough to commit but they want to keep them on the sidelines as an option.
POCKETING. This term explains the behavior of a person that hides you away from others.
