Five rebels surrender to Davao Norte Governor

FIVE COMMUNIST rebels surrendered to Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib at the Provincial Capitol after reportedly feeling the pressure of ongoing combat operations.

The surrender, which included the turnover of several firearms, marks a significant development in the government’s efforts to end insurgency in the region.

The former combatants, who had been eluding authorities and reportedly “lying low,” presented four high-powered firearms and one low-powered firearm to Jubahib.

Their decision to surrender was facilitated by the efforts of Lieutenant Colonel Jovily Carmel Cabading, commanding officer of the 60th Infantry (Mediator) Battalion.

Jubahib lauded the rebels’ decision to surrender, emphasizing the government’s steadfast commitment to providing support and opportunities for former combatants. He also commended the continued efforts of the 60th IB to engage communities.

Despite the surrenderees originating from Bukidnon and Agusan del Sur, Jubahib assured them of the provincial government’s full support to reintegrate them into society.

The military believed the surrender would challenge other remaining rebels to resurface, return to the mainstream of society, and embrace a life of peace.

Also present during the activity were key officials, including Colonel Harry Argamosa, deputy commander of the 1001st Brigade; PCol. Alexander Serrano Jr., Provincial Police Office Davao del Norte director; Rose Rapista, head of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) DDN; and Jonathan Leybag, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) provincial director.
