Firearms show offers speedy processing and gun safety seminars

BUYERS at the 30th Defense and Sporting Arms Show at SMX in Lanang can take possession of their firearms within 24 hours, the Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers (AFAD) announced Wednesday, Oct. 23.

The firearms can be claimed at Camp Catitipan.

“The Firearms and Explosives Office can process firearm purchases immediately, allowing buyers to claim their firearms the next day at Camp Catitipan,” said Alaric Toppacio, AFAD comptroller during a press conference on Wednesday at SMX convention center.

“This program expedites the process, especially for our friends here in Mindanao,” he said.

Toppacio added that a one-stop shop is available for those who need a license.

“Applicants can complete the entire process, including neuro tests, right here at SMX,” he said.

The 30th Defense and Sporting Arms Show (DSAS) will run from Oct. 23-26 at the SMX Convention Center, Lanang.

The event, organized by the Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers (AFAD), will showcase a wide array of world-class imported and locally manufactured firearms, ammunition, and accessories.

Senator Ronald Dela Rosa emphasized the importance of balancing technological advancements in firearms with responsible usage and effective legislation.

“Smart-gun features and improved ballistic systems enhance safety and accuracy, but we must also prioritize proper training and development,” he said. “Laws like RA 10591 are essential to regulate ownership and ensure accountability.”

Dela Rosa congratulated AFAD, stating, “Events like this, with simultaneous gun safety seminars, are a step in the right direction.”

Edwin Año, an AFAD officer, encouraged potential buyers to inquire about layaway plans offered by some exhibitors.

Toppacio advised attendees to explore the various firearms on display and engage with exhibitors.

When asked about changes since the last show in Davao seven years ago, Topaccio remarked, “Most of the firearms you see here are brand new.”

Dela Rosa stressed the need for a whole-of-nation approach to gun safety, particularly in Mindanao, where firearms hold strong appeal.

He concluded by thanking AFAD members and gun enthusiasts from across Mindanao and the Visayas for their participation.

AFAD has lined up a series of activities during the three-day event, including seminars on safe gun handling, the legal process of acquiring firearms, and navigating the required government documents.

In coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP), the event will feature a one-stop area for the application and renewal of firearm licenses, with some products available for purchase within 24 hours.

Among the confirmed exhibitors are major industry players such as Trust Trade, PB Dionisio & Co., Inc., Armscor/Squires Bingham International, Tactical Corner, Inc., Hahn Manila Enterprises, Shooters Guns and Ammo Corp., and many others.
