Filipino communities in Europe continue to rally for Duterte’s release from ICC detention

FILIPINOS across Europe staged protest rallies on Saturday, May 17, demanding the release and return of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who they believe is unjustly detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

The rallies centered on allegations of “crimes against humanity” leveled against Duterte.

Since Duterte’s detention, supporters have maintained a continuous vigil outside the ICC detention facility, holding handmade signs and conveying messages of solidarity. Due to restrictions on visits, the daily vigils served as a visible expression of support from afar.

On April 26, a significant assembly of Duterte supporters from across Europe and beyond gathered for a large-scale demonstration. The event featured shared stories, songs of solidarity, and expressions of admiration for Duterte, whom they believe the government has effectively exiled.

Videos showcasing Duterte’s legacy stirred emotions and pride among attendees.

The gathering, described as a picnic-style event, celebrated Filipino identity, highlighting shared meals, traditional dances, community warmth, and deep-rooted faith. Supporters vowed to continue their protests until Duterte is released and welcomed home as a hero.

On May 24, 2025, a big gathering will be conducted at The Hague in the continued call to free former President Rodrigo Duterte.
