DOE ‘will not meddle yet’ over Samal, Nordeco power issue

THE DEPARTMENT of Energy (DOE) washed its hands off the recent issue raised by the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCOS) against the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative Inc. (Nordeco).

In a media interview on July 8, Dr. Rowena Cristina Guevara, DOE Undersecretary noted that Samal Island has sufficient energy supply.

“We have to correct the reports about Samal, kasi hindi totoo ‘yung reports diyan. May bago siyang planta so hindi namin alam bakit ganoon ‘yung reports na lumalabas. Actually, Samal Island has enough supply,” Guevara said.

Guevara stressed that “the case was more embroiled over the conflict but was sure that the island had enough supply.”

She said the Samal’s local government units and Nordeco must first resolve their power distribution issues, as the department awaits resolution to avoid the power woes’ conflict from further escalating.

“So, let’s wait for that to get resolved. Ayaw namin makigulo muna kasi may nireresolve pa,” she added.

Last month, IGaCOS Mayor Al David Uy expressed his sentiments towards the media forum regarding the persistent economic problem faced by the island due to its power crisis.

According to the report, Uy stressed that the power cooperative gave zero updates to the construction of the P1-billion submarine power cable project, which started three years ago.
